Reviews

The Mews is fantastic, extremely well equipped and spotlessly clean. We particularly liked the hot tub. We had a fabulous midweek break and are looking forward to arranging a return trip.

The Mews is a lovely property, with everything you could wish for provided. The hot tub was to die for. Loved it all.

We had a fantastic family weekend. The location of the property was great and within easy reach of Ashbourne. The condition of the property was fantastic, really a home from home and very comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the hot tub which was a highlight to the weekend! Hope to visit again in the future and will certainly recommend it.

We had a great girls weekend at the Mews. We particularly liked the peace and quiet and the spacious accommodation at the cottage. The owners were friendly and helpful.

The Mews cottage is equipped with everything you could need for a weekend away. The décor creates a lovely relaxing environment, we particular enjoyed relaxing in the warmth of the gas wood burning stove in the sitting room. The hot tub was a real treat and a great way to relax, day and night! We had a great weekend and would highly recommend this cottage.

The property was extremely comfortable with every possible necessity catered for. The property was clean and the owners were very welcoming and helpful.

The weekend break was lovely, and would highly recommend, everything was perfect. My daughter loved feeding the sheep from the garden, and spending time here, it was very spacious inside. Would return in future.

This cottage is a high standard accommodation, the owners were great and there were lots of little touches. Not forgetting the hot tub! There are pet sheep who you can hand feed, and the setting is idyllic. The local pub was less than ten minutes walk and serves great food. The beds were comfortable, had quality bed linen and towels, a large lounge with lovely décor and an amazing fireplace. The whole property is fabulous.

The Mews is an exceptional barn conversion completed to a high specification and it would be difficult not to feel relaxed here. The place was spotless and the owner made lots of extra touches which were fully appreciated. The hot tub is divine and sitting outside in it, either in rain or shine, listening to the birds and sheep was bliss! Highly recommended accommodation.

A beautiful property which was tastefully decorated and spotlessly clean. The hot tub had a lovely outlook. The owners were very friendly and helpful. There were two great pubs within walking distance and it was very close to the lovely market town of Ashbourne. Can't fault it!

Amazing, luxury cottage with plenty space.

Liked the peaceful surroundings, the excellent hot tub, and the friendly sheep.

Fantastic property, very attractively furnished, but also cosy and homely with very friendly and helpful owners. Loved the hot tub which was checked daily and topped up with chemicals as necessary. An all round perfect relaxing holiday - exceeded our expectations in every way.

We had a fabulous weekend away. Felt welcomed and informed by the owners but were given complete privacy throughout our stay. The cottage itself was gorgeous made even nicer by the beautiful setting. The garden and hot tub were well used as we were fortunate to have great weather. I will definately be recommending this property to family and friends and am sure we will be back!

The accommodation and setting were absolutely gorgeous and we had a fantastic weekend. Our host was very friendly and accommodating and even left us some lovely home-made cakes for the weekend!

Lovely barn conversion, very well-equipped. Very friendly owner who made us feel welcome. Good quality hot-tub with plenty of room for six! Stylish décor and much more room than is evident from the photographs on the website.

Fantastic accommodation and location.

As a family we enjoyed our stay, a time to unwind and spend with our family in Hereford and one from Italy. There was plenty of space for our little grand daughter to have fun. We plan to visit next year.

We liked the space and loved the quality of the accommodation. The Hot tub was a was a lovely addition. We are a group of women in our early 50's and we have been organising mini breaks for over 10 years. We thought it was one of the nicest places we have stayed. We like to walk whilst away and we were able to complete a circular walk from The Mews. We would book the accommodation again.

Loved the cottage. Owner very welcoming, and all the animals fantastic! Hot tub great. Plenty of space for 3 couples, as we all had out own bathrooms, very spacious living area! Would definitely return.

I thought the layout of the living area and kitchen was great as it meant you could still be part of the conversation whichever room you were in.

The hot tub was amazing, the owner was so helpful, she was happy to help with all my questions even before we got to the property! The cottage was just perfect - so clean and country like, all of the rooms in the cottage were gorgeous. We loved the sheep in the back garden! We cant wait to come back and visit the cottage again.

The warm welcome from the owner and the outstanding accommodation. The animals were a huge bonus for my 7 year old twins! A lovely place to spend my birthday weekend with family!

The whole property and surroundings were fantastic. The hot tub was the highlight for us!! I have already recommended the property and would go back again myself. Clean, full of character & lovely owner.

It was a fantastic place for a group to chill and relax. The hot tub was brilliant.

The hot tub was fab. The landlady was great and she ensured we had all we needed and helped us out with walks. An extremely relaxing and enjoyable weekend.

We loved the location and the owners were exceptionally friendly. We would definitely go back again. Our son loved feeding the sheep as well.

Great hosts, really friendly. Fabulous lounge/dining area. Super kitchen.

We loved everything about The Mews - the place, the people, the pub and Neil the sheep!

The hot tub. The quality of the accommodation and the welcoming owner.

Thanks to the family and the animals, we all had a fantastic time. The owner was so helpful and couldn't do enough for us. Thank you for sharing your cottage and animals with us. I had a fantastic 65th birthday.

Excellent, well equipped property in a good location and lovely owners.

Everything that we could possibly need was there including freshly baked scones on our arrival. The surroundings are delightful and peaceful apart from sheep baaing and cockerel crowing but that was a delight. The hot tub was wonderful, we all want one at home! The owners were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed including freshly laid eggs.

The cottage felt like a real home, not like a holiday home. Very relaxing. The owners had equipped it very well and even provided scones and milk on arrival which was lovely.

The decor was very tasteful. The cottage was very clean and snuggly warm. Hot tub was a brilliant touch. The owners were friendly and helpful and on the doorstep! The property is in a perfect position for walking, shopping or staying in!

The hot tub was great. The owner was charming and very helpful. And our kids loved the sheep (and other animals) in the fields next door.

The property was excellent and located in a accessible location for many attractions. The owners were really friendly and made us feel very welcome at the property and we would recommend to friends and family. We would definitely return ourselves.

A great deal of thought has been put into furnishing the cottage to a very high standard to provide a luxurious holiday. The 'little extras' provided by the owners & their hospitality & friendliness made our holiday even more special.

Hot tub amazing! Very welcoming and friendly hosts. Would definitely recommend. Sarancen Pub,(Smirley) does excellent food.

Cottage was excellent - location, furnishings, friendliness and helpfulness of owner. The hot tub was really enjoyed by all. Plenty to see and do in the area.

Great hosts, great place. Hot tub fantastic, would definitely go back!

This is our second visit to the Mews and I would recommend it to anyone - the holiday is made all the more special by the owners and their wonderful family and pets. The hot tub makes the holiday a real piece of luxury. The Mews is a beautiful cottage in a perfect location.

Everything about The Mews was superb and we cannot recommend it too highly. The conversion of the barn is most imaginative and attractive and the living spaces are beautifully fitted out with furniture and equipment to the highest standard for this kind of cottage. The owner could not have been more helpful and went to a great deal of trouble to find out information about places we wanted to visit. There is a great deal to do in the area. The provision of a hot tub on the patio provided much fun for our four grandchildren and the owners' pets (two dogs and a cat) rapidly became a part of our family for the duration of our stay. The flower tubs and decking at the rear of the cottage provided a very pretty setting when we wanted to relax outdoors and the views from the house are exquisite. This was a really great place for a family holiday and we want to thank you for suggesting it.

Fabulous cottage, very clean, very stylish and extremely comfortable. Excellent holiday for relaxing, had some wonderful nights spent in the hot tub surrounded by the peaceful countryside and a glass of wine. What more could you ask for?

This is a fantastic property, in an excellent location, and the owners are 100% genuine and welcoming. The hot tub was amazing!

We all had a great weekend and I am so glad we decided to spend it at The Mews, it had everything we needed and made the weekend that extra bit special. The hot tub was amazing, especially after a day at Alton towers! The owners are very friendly and helpful, will definitely return.

Beautifully presented and well equipped cottage in gorgeous location. The perfect place to unwind and relax with the added bonus of a fantastic hot tub with views of the countryside. Will definitely visit again.

Fabulous place and hot tub!

This property was a dream for the 7 days. I have already thought of pre booking again. The Mews was amazing. The hot tub was a bonus. The family were very welcoming. The Red Lion pub had a very warm and traditional feel.

Stunning Cottage

The girls and I have just returned from a 2 night break at the Mews where we had an amazing, relaxing time. The house was clean and tidy, with stunning decor and the new hot tub was super! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and made the most of all the amenities the cottage had on offer. Philippa met us on arrival and was very accommodating. She gave us lots of local information to ensure we could make the most of our weekend. We have recommended The Mews to our friends and will hopefully be back ourselves next year.

Stunning luxurious cottage

We have spend two nights at The Mews for a birthday celebration. The cottage is simply stunning inside and out , with luxurious home comforts in a beautiful countryside setting. Highlights include the stand out fire place , bath tube and not forgetting the spacious hot tub. Hosts were friendly and welcoming and there if we needed any assistance. Beds are comfortable and there is plenty of room for maximum guests. Would highly recommend this cottage for a relaxing few days if you are looking for something a little bit special and luxurious.

Fantastic Place

Just returned from a 3 night break at the Mews, a family get together for my husband's 60th birthday. It was like a home from home, had everything that you need. Place spotlessly clean, comfy beds, lovely setting with the added bonus of the hot tub which was great Philippa met us on arrival, very friendly and helpful. Will definitely return.

Perfect week away

What can I say........ absolutely stunning, Phillipa was there to meet us with fresh eggs and cakes. Immaculate and cosy stay, everything you could want is in the property, with a lovely hot tub after a day out, also to open the back door to the field with the pet sheep! especially LARRY! ps. they love a digestive biscuit. Then be greeted by Natasha the Cat partial to a bit of bacon!. Warm and cosy stay, pub 6 min walk, food was excellent. Definitely will return without a doubt and didn't want to leave.

Perfect holiday retreat

My family and I have just spent an incredible week at the Mews thanks to Pauline and Julian’s exceptional hospitality. A delicious homemade cake, fresh eggs and milk greeted us on our arrival followed shortly afterwards by the most adorable family of bread-eating sheep. The beautiful and spacious accommodation was flawless, with plenty of space for the whole family to have time alone or gather together to play board games round the table. The hot tub sealed the deal. Altogether a perfect holiday. Thank you!

Celebration Weekend

A gorgeous weekend getaway celebrating my parents 50th wedding anniversary! 8 of us (3 children 5adults) just spent a long weekend at The Mews and it was a real home from home, we had a great time. Lovely home made scones and jam on arrival, and a gorgeous hot tub to relax in. Views over the fields and the pleasure of meeting a new born lamb. Would recommend. Everything was lovely

Perfect girls weekend away

Just had the most fantastic girls weekend away at The Mews. Slept 6 comfortably. Decor amazing, was comfortable, clean, warm and stunning. We all enjoyed the hot tub even though we had snow most of the weekend. Sheep in the field behind us were an added surprise. Highly recommend a stay here. Phillipa-owner was very kind and gave us advise of the local places to visit. Had lunch on the Saturday in the Red Lion, just a few minutes away (walking distance) and returned the next day for Sunday lunch as it was so good. Stunning countryside and 2 other accommodations also available through Phillipa. A huge added bonus was fresh eggs and home made scones and jam left out for us on our arrival. Couldn’t ask for more.

Fabulous cottage, fabulous hosts

Have just stayed at the Mews for the third time with a group of girlfriends and the place just gets better. Everything you need is here - you just need to turn up and relax. The place is beautifully decorated, is clean, and has everything you need to enjoy your holiday - so nothing to stress about! The owners, Phillipa and Jules are just the loveliest people, and nothing is too much trouble for them. We love the Mews for a girly getaway and get to chill in the hot tub which is just brilliant! I can't recommend the place enough - and they also have two other properties which are perfect for a smaller gathering. Go and see them - you won't be disappointed. 🙂

Fabulous cottage in a lovely location!

Myself and six friends stayed in The Mews for a long weekend. The cottage is beautiful, and Philippa has done an amazing job of making it feel like a home away from home!

Perfect!

Such a lush place! The cottage was absolutely pristine. Six friends and I stayed for three nights for our birthday get together and it was fantastic. Beautiful surroundings, the hot tub is great and the local pub is a five minute walk - i’d absolutely recommend.

The mews

Just spent a fantastic weekend at the news. Gorgeous house. Thank you for the fresh eggs and cake . We were made to feel very welcome and really enjoyed our time here x

Perfect for our New Year stay

From the moment we arrived, the Mews lived up to expectations. Phillipa, the host, made sure we had everything we needed and left us to get on with our weekend. Champagne in the hot tub to see in the New Year, local pub for meals - all brilliant. The cottage was well equipped and everything worked. The fires and heating kept us cosy when we got back from walks in the Peaks (Dovedale is only 20 minutes away in the car). Will certainly consider booking again - you should too!

Perfect stay

Just returned from midweek break at The Mews. (Family get together ) Totally agree with previous reviews... Best cottage we have ever stayed in. Everything was so well thought out ... Simple things that make the difference.... Large kettle ,teapot & toaster made breakfast hassle free. Numerous pots & pans & crockery. Plenty of literature on local surroundings, games & cards for rainy days, although we had great weather. Plastic cups for the hot tub & a lovely welcoming gift of fresh farm eggs, jug of milk & home made cake. We visited the Red Lion one evening & were given a friendly welcome so of course we had to go again on pie night. Can't wait to return to the mews & the red lion.

The hot tub rocks!

I booked the Mews for a girls weekend away, with the hot tub being our main lure! And we were not disappointed! The hot tub comfortably fitted all 7 of us. The cottage is beautifully decorated and so homely. The photographs really do not do it justice- it's much bigger than I expected. We are all already considering booking our next trip with husbands and partners. Simply can't fault it. Brilliant!

Wonderful property, friendly owners

beautiful property! The photos do not really do it justice. Well equipped and in a picturesque setting. We loved the hot tub with its lovely outlook. The owners Phillipa and Julian could really not have been more hospitable or helpful during our stay. The local pub,The Red Lion, which is 10 mins walk away serves good food and is very friendly. A slightly longer stroll takes you to the Saracens Head which is a gastropub well worth a visit. Close by,Ashbourne is a nice market town with some great shops and cafes. We will definitely return!

wonderful home from home

Home from home ~ I wish my home was like The Mews or The Retreat which we also rented for our group. Beautifully finished accommodation, a kitchen with everything we needed, a lovely lounge, nice bedrooms with comfortable beds, 2 with ensuite shower rooms & a lovely house bathroom. We loved the hot tub facing the field with the friendly sheep that were fairly interested in us humans especially if we had bread & gorgeous lambs frolicking about. One of our group was in a wheelchair & The Retreat was perfect all on one level. The weather was mixed, but the Sunday was sunny & warm, some of us went to nearby Alton Towers with the rest relaxing in the hot tub & on the back terrace. The Red Bull within walking distance is friendly with a good reasonable menu, they also have a good range in pies. The owners Philippa & Julian were lovely & very helpful 🙂

Absolutely Gorgeous !

We've just come back from a weekend at The Mews and we absolutely loved it. Philippa and her family are the perfect hosts - they make you feel so welcome and then leave you to enjoy your time at the cottage. All the bedrooms are beautifully decorated and the hot tub is the perfect way to finish the day. The only regret is that we didn't stay longer ! We'll definitely be back and will recommend highly to family and friends. Sharon x

Beautiful cottage for a quiet, relaxing escape

We recently stayed at the Mews in Hollington. Its was very easy to get to with a sat nav, making the journey there completely pleasant. When we walked into the cottage there was a real "wow" factor as the converted barn has a warm but open feeling as you walk in. The kitchen is well stocked with pots and pans and general equipment, and there was a jug of milk left for us on entry and some yummy crumpets. We though the lounge area was lovely - a lovely room with seating and dining space for 8 people, although the dining table was in a slightly cramp position. There was a lovely feature fireplace with gas powered fire making the cottage have a very cozy feel. There are enough "real" beds for 6 people, 2 double and 1 twin, but there are also at least 3 temporary beds, leaving plenty of room for plenty of people. The upstairs double bed is a particularly lovely room. The hot tub is excellent - plenty of space for all of us to get in, and quite advance in terms of features with various levels of bubble settings. the hot tub is set on a lovely patio with a table for dining al fresco, and overlooking a lovely back yard filled with sheep and phesants. A great cottage for a quiet relaxing escape, not suitable for those looking for a bit of a party cottage, as there isn't a town to be seen within a 20min drive. Walking in the surround area is fairly flat, but there are (very muddy when we were there) bridle paths around. The cottage is on the edge of the beautiful peak district so you don't have to go far for a more adventurous and glorious countryside. Perfect for those looking to really relax for the weekend.

So lovely I want to live there!

What a place!! Superbly decorated to really high standard. Everything we needed and more. Very comfortable indeed. The hot tub is such a special advantage of this property compared to others. Was within easy reach for walking in the area. Would highly recommend this to anyone.

The Perfect Weekend Away Ever .... please let me live there!!!

Me and my 6 friends went to cottage to celebrate my friends 21st birthday and we had the best weekend ever! I can not even start to describe to you all how amazing the cottage was. We hadn’t even left and we were already trying to plan when we would be going back! Phillippa was absolutely fantastic even before we got there every silly little question she answered and as a super over organised person it put me at ease. The photos on here don’t even show you have gorgeous the cottage is! We all want to win the lottery and buy it now!! The lounge was great for all of us to congregate at night and chill out! The kitchen was great we cooked for ourselves almost all weekend and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything you could possibly need. All of the bedrooms were gorgeous and so comfy and what can I say about that gorgeous bath tub!! It is the most gorgeous cottage with all the bare beams it is absolutely gorgeous! We even decorated the lounge area and threw a surprise Big Bang Theory Party for the birthday girl and it looked great! All the animals on the grounds were great we love Neil and Amber the sheep! We love the cat coming to say hello on a morning and the dogs were gorgeous. We were very lucky to have gorgeous warm weather so we spent all weekend in the gorgeous hot tub drinking lots of champagne! It was the perfect last touch to the cottage and we have all agreed to go back as soon as possible. We went to The Red Lion pub where we had a gorgeous pub meal and great service! We especially loved the traditional phone box in the village where it was stocked with books that you could borrow!! Thank you for a great weekend Phillippa and we can’t wait to come back!!!

Amazing welcome - owners went out of their way to make our week special

We can't rate this beautiful property and our stay highly enough. This cottage had everything we needed and more besides. We stayed with our two young children (7 and 8) and had some friends and their two children stay as a surprise for husband's 40th. We catered mostly for ourselves as we are keen cooks and found the kitchen was fully stocked with all the kitchenalia we could need. The property was warm, clean, homely - just relaxing, especially with the hot tub. Phillipa, Julian and their family including the animals (a bonus for our children) were always so welcoming and we knew that if we had had any problems then they would have done everything they could to rectify this during our stay. They immediately felt more like friends of old than simply the property owners. Given that it is a barn conversion, the upstairs bedroom makes good use of the loft space but in doing so it does have a low bed - husband is 6'2", so long way down for him. This property is ideal for families or groups of friends looking for a great location and a real treat. Our children would especially like to thank Max, Flirty and Dave (the dogs), Archie (the cat) and Neil, Lulu and Dusty (the sheep) - apologies to those they have failed to mention. We are sure that any one else staying at this property will appreciate and respect the thought and effort that has gone into making this a holiday home rather than a holiday let.

Perfect-cosy, clean, bubbles, quaint, views, pubs, walks, wine, laughs!

Visited The Mews for a weekend at the beginning of January with 7 of my friends for a cosy leaving do before I leave for Australia in a couple of weeks. We chose this property due to the fact it had a hottub big enough for us all and we were not disappointed!! The pictures do not do it justice - it is such a pretty place - so clean and cosy and big without losing that imtimate feeling. We were very lucky with the weather - it was very mild & dry so we walked to the Red Lion on our first evening there - a very friendly, cosy local pub with proper pub grub at proper pub grub prices! We went for a walk around surrounding areas the next day and stopped at The Yew Tree for a nice refreshing drink on the way back. We took a drive into nearby Ashbourne in the afternoon to replenish alcohol supplies and have some chips and a cream tea 🙂 That evening was spent soley surrounding by bubbles - of the alchol variety in our glasses and in the water surrounding us - the definite highlight of the weekend!!! It was such a luxury and just made our stay that much better. Both mornings we enjoyed breakfast all together sat around the table and the lviing room was lovely and big enough for us all to sit comfortably on an evening. Have already recommended this property and would go again if I wasn't going away!Owner was also called Philippa (very unusual for me to come across another Philippa) and was very friendly & welcoming. We all loved every single second of our stay 🙂

The best cottage you will ever stay in

As soon as we arrived felt at home we were met by the owners who are wonderful and can't do enough for you. The mews are breath taking no expense has been spared even feather quilts. The hot tub is amazing on an evening with glass of wine overlooked by a field of sheep of which Neil the sheep is very much in charge. He alone is worth the visit such a character. The pub down the road Red Lion is fantastic food well worth a visit. Overall wonderful place wonderful family who run it and of course the pets are fab. We will book again and bring all our friends.

fantastic place, great location, friendly welcoming owners

A great place to stay if you like animals. It was close to Alton towers which suited us. The mews is lovely inside, perfect for relaxing. The hot tub was super! The owners were extremely inviting and helpful. We will be returning....

Best holiday let we have ever stayed in!!

I can not rate this holiday let higher!! The property is fantastic and although the photos look amazing on the website, they really don't do the property justice!! We were greeted by the owner, who could not have been friendlier. This is the first property that we have rented that we felt at ease with the owner and could really relax and enjoy our stay! The owner could not have been more helpful and even let me have some paracetamol for a headache! (The nearest shop is a drive away and while this is probably a good thing, you do have to be organised?!!) My 4 year old daughter LOVED the animals, especially the sheep she befriended. We have had two outbursts of tears since our return (only yesterday!!) about not being able to go and feed and play with the sheep! I would definately would like to return for another break away and would definately recommend to others (in fact we have already!!)

beautiful house beautiful people and animals

made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived, grandchildren given free range to all the animals, best birthday with all the family

Fantastic holiday

We had a super stay at the Mews. The owners were friendly and approachable, happy for us to arrive before the usual check in time as it was available. The cottage was spotless, cosy and welcoming. The beds are extremely comfortable. There were some crumpets, butter, milk and jam laid out for our arrival, and other small touches like dishwasher tablets/washing powder. The hot tub was superb, especially in the evening with a glass of wine! We had 4 young children with us and this presented no problem, they loved feeding the sheep at the back of our property! My mum also rented the Retreat and it was of a similar high standard. Only minor problem was although the owner kindly lent us her code for internet access, we could only pick up a signal by standing near the front door. Probably not a major problem if you are on holiday but we did need to spend a fair amount of time online for work purposes. We look forward to returning next year for another family break!

Very comfortable, clean and well maintained cottage

We arrived excited about our family holiday and were greeted cordially by our hostess. The cottage was clean and welcoming. Our every need was met. When the fridge freezer broke down it was replaced within 24 hours with no fuss. The hot tub was great and our hostess took great care maintaining it. An excellent cottage, spacious for the six of us and really well equipt. Highly recommended

The only cottage we've ever wanted to return to!

Lovely welcoming hosts... warm cottage... pub close by... and the hot tub in the snow was fabulous fun! We take a few trips a year as a group of friends, and until now have never found a cottage we've like enough to return to! Just hope I haven't left it too late to book again!

Peace and Quiet in the country

Loved our stay in this cottage. It was beautifully decorated and the hot tub was a real bonus. The view at the back was a highlight - we would come back from a day out and either sit in the hot tub or sit with a cup of tea on the patio chairs and watch the sheep grazing in the fields. Very relaxing. The owners were very friendly. It was nice to arrive and find milk in the fridge and a cake on the side!! Lots to see and do - especially liked the National Trust properties of which there were many and the Crown Derby factory tour was a real treat.
