General Info

An outstanding Grade II listed detached country home set in its own grounds on the outskirts of the village of Starbotton, one of the real gems of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This former farmhouse is set within fifteen acres of gardens and grazing land and provides stunning holiday accommodation in this beautiful area. Over the years it has changed from a humble farmhouse to an elegant family home with several early Georgian additions. Various colourful characters have occupied Hilltop over the years, including a well known Huddersfield businessman who collected over 140 paintings, many of which featured Hilltop and the surrounding area, and were affectionately known as the Roebuck Collection. From the moment guests enter, they will be enchanted by the character and charm of the place, with the old date stone 1610, exposed stoneworks, old beams, listed meat safe situated in the ceiling, tiled harlequin floors, mullioned windows, parquet floor and much more. The house features a fabulous kitchen with superb inglenook fireplace incorporating an AGA, together with hand-built units and oak and granite worktops. There is a spacious dining room with woodburning stove, piano and recessed window seat to take advantage of the lovely views of the front garden. On either side of the dining room are the sitting room, again featuring a beautiful inglenook fireplace with an open fire and the original drawing room which has a large screen TV, an ideal room for relaxing. A useful cloakroom and a small music/library, ideal for a quiet reflective glass of wine, complete the ground floor. Upstairs are four stylish bedrooms, including one with an en-suite shower, with three other bedrooms providing spacious and flexible sleeping arrangements and all but one boasting fabulous views. Outside, in the annexe, there are a further two bedrooms, one with an en-suite shower and one with a kitchenette having the added benefit of being on the ground floor with fabulous views across the gardens and up onto the fell. Relax and enjoy the delightful walled cottage garden with herbs and mature flower beds overlooking the attached paddock; or sit back and relax in the superb hot tub where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Dales countryside. There are numerous footpaths, circular walks and the River Wharfe on the doorstep of this luxurious cottage, plus close by are Buckden, Malham, Kettlewell, Grassington and Skipton. This excellent cottage offers a truly memorable holiday for anyone lucky enough to spend time in this beautiful location. Read More

Reviews

Stunning property in an idyllic location. The house is immaculately presented throughout and all the bedrooms are equally beautiful which is very important when you are in a large group as nobody wants to get the sub standard room!! The house is within easy walking distance to pubs and village shop and the scenery is breath taking.

We could not have asked for a better cottage, it was perfect!

Great holiday home for a large party, lots of space, a great kitchen and the hot tub a great success. The décor was lovely as were the bedrooms.

Amazing weekend in a gorgeous house.............

We stayed at the lovely Hilltop House for a surprise retirement family get together. Couldn't have chosen a lovelier house, a more stunning location or more helpful owners. The house is stylishly presented and of great quality, gardens and grounds are a delight and walks literally from the door are wonderful. We hired the services of Duncan Collinge from locally based White Rose Catering who came in and prepared us an amazing meal. What a way to celebrate ! All three generations loved the whole experience and we cant wait to find an excuse to come back as a weekend was just not long enough. Don't hesitate just book this real gem of a place.

Beautiful cottage set in a beautiful valley

Hilltop is smart, spacious, clean and homely. As a large family mixed with grandparents, siblings, pre schoolers and a baby, it was a perfect base for us. We all made full use of the hot tub and its extensive views. The annex rooms were brilliant as it meant that some of us could be away from the noisier members of the household. The huge enclosed garden was perfect for the children to run around and fly a kite. It's also really well placed for exploring the river, with lovely picnic/Rock-hopping sites to find, especially up at yockenthwaite which is a short drive away. The local pub was friendly and welcoming too. A very enjoyable trip. The owners were excellent in terms of contact and making sure all was well but there really wasn't anything of issue in the house at all.

Lovely House

What a lovely house! Would highly recommend. Stayed here as with 9 others. Bedrooms are spacious. Sitting room is very cozy. Dining room and kitchen are fab and not to mention the hot tub outside amongst the beautiful view. The house was very clean and tidy. House is well equipped and some things are very thoughtful. Thank you for a great stay. Would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful house - shame about the people running it

This house is in one of the most beautiful places in the world and we were excited to spend Christmas there. Unfortunately the beauty of the location - and the actual house - were not matched by either the maintenance of the property or, more importantly, the level of hospitality offered by the owner. There were numerous problems, including a hot tub full of old smelly water from the previous guests, mouse droppings and mould in the bathroom and the Aga not working properly (we had to call out the engineer to repair it), broken light fittings, damp firewood... But the owner (hundreds of miles away in London) failed spectacularly to remedy any problems or even to apologise for them. In fact, when we complained at the end of our stay she accused us of having broken things but quickly had to retract as she had no grounds for the accusation. We've had family Christmas in other big houses for the best part of a decade and we've never had this kind of basic lack of hospitality and grace. A real shame that such a lovely house is being run in this way.
